Barbecue hut
The barbecue hut surprises with its history and comfort The unique barbecue hut of Kaidan Kiho houses approximately ten people – and plenty of interesting history. The logs used for making the hut first served as a bakery at the end of the 19th century in the village of Ristiina. At the turn of the century, the building was moved to the Tuukkala farm where it was used as a dairy where all the cream produced in the municipality was churned in a horse-powered churn into butter and exported all the way to England. You can still see the bearing housing of the pulley in the rock.
During the war, the dairy building served as a home for an evacuated family, and later, as a home for the farm's employees. There was a time when "kilju" – simple alcoholic drink made of water, sugar and yeast – was brewed in the building. Luckily, not a trace of its smell is left. At the end of last century, in the 1990's, the logs of the dairy building ended up at Kaidan Kiho in their present duty as a charming barbecue hut. Octagonal in shape, it is rounder than the ordinary hexagonal hut, and also more spacious.
Ox skins from the Tuukkala farm cows are spread on the benches running along the wall to further increase the cosiness of the hut. The hut is equipped with a grill welded by the host Esko himself, ready-to-use firewood, coffee pot for brewing coffee on the fire, casserole, skewers, boards for preparing salmon on an open fire ("loimulohi"), grill, one large and several small frying pans, as well as a refrigerator for storing food and cold drinks.
